Valentine's Day, celebrated on February 14, is known as "the holiday of lovers". On this day, couples exchange cards, flowers, chocolates or other forms of loving gifts. In modern times, Valentine's Day has been linked to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, but not all scholars agree with this. The festival of Lupercalia was held on February 15 in honor of one of the Roman gods, Lupercus, and a series of rituals to ensure fertility were an important element of the celebration. He was arrested, imprisoned and later executed by beheading on February 14. The Roman Catholic Church named him a saint after his death as Saint Valentine.
Celebrating Valentine's Day in Denmark is a relatively new tradition. The United States can be said to be the pioneer country of the holiday. 192 million Valentine's cards are sent every year.
